Awareness Gift Boutique is pleased to announce that we have been featured in the November issue of Diabetic Living Magazine, a sister company of Better Homes and Garden Magazine. The printed magazine hit the news stands today and an online version will be available on the Diabetic Living website via a slideshow beginning December 1.

How did this happen? Actually, quite easily! We were contacted several months ago by a representative from Diabetic Living. She was working on holiday piece (a Holiday Gift Guide) and came across our diabetes line. She contacted us and asked if we could send some product samples to her editor. Of course, we can! Once approved by the editor, the selected product went to a formal ‘photo shoot’ to be photographed for the magazine. It was all quite exciting!

Once the piece was complete, we were sent a pdf to view but ‘hush’ was the word until November. Keeping quiet was the most difficult part as we were so excited, we couldn’t wait to tell everyone. Extreme Pain of Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is characterized by long-term, body-wide pain and tender points— which are specific locations on the body that are overly sensitive when pressed— in the joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues. Fibromyalgia is unique because it can develop on its own or along with other conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.

The extreme pain caused by fibromyalgia can actually mimic the pain that occurs with types of arthritis, but the swelling, destruction, and deformity of joints seen in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis do not occur with fibromyalgia alone.

Living with Fibromyalgia

Some people with fibromyalgia notice that their pain improves during the day yet increases again during the evening, but many fibromyalgia patients have unrelenting pain every single day and every single night. The pain can increase with activity, anxiety, and stress, and in some cases it varies depending on the weather.

If you’ve ever felt so run down and tired that you can’t even leave your own house, you know what a terrible feeling it is. People who are living with chronic fatigue syndrome know that feeling all too well.

Chronic fatigue syndrome, or CFS, is a condition of prolonged and severe tiredness that is not relieved by rest. CFS is not related to exertion: people who live with CFS are tired and fatigued no matter what they do, even if they try to “take it easy for awhile.”

The symptoms of CFS are similar to that of many common viral infections, but they last for months. In order to be officially diagnosed with CFS, someone must be experiencing symptoms for at least 6 months.

Symptoms of CFS include extreme tiredness that is not brought on by any particular activity. This fatigue must be severe enough to prevent someone from following through with their normal, everyday activities, such as going to work or cooking dinner. Their quality of life is severely altered because of their condition.

There is no real cure for CFS, which makes awareness of the condition even more important. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome: A Parent’s Worst Nightmare

I recently traveled to Washington, DC and had the opportunity to visit my brother’s grave at Arlington National Cemetery. He was killed in action in Iraq in 2007 and I carry my grief with me every single day. Time really does help heal wounds, but his death has been taken the hardest by our parents. I became a mother after my brother’s death. I have a new understanding of the horror a parent must feel when losing a child.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of death among infants from one month to one year old. Just as the name implies, SIDS is the sudden and unexplained death of an infant. It is incredibly frightening because it often strikes without warning in babies who were seemingly healthy. SIDS is only diagnosed once all other causes of death have been ruled out.

Despite years of research, there is no single factor that is likely to cause SIDS on its own, but doctors urge parents to place infants under the age of one year on their backs to sleep, instead of on their stomach because most cases of SIDS usually occur while the baby is sleeping. Most SIDS deaths occur in babies between two and four months old, and for some reason SIDS deaths increase during cold weather.
