Fibromyalgia Awareness: Living with Chronic Pain

As part of our quest to “Create awareness for matters that matter,” Awareness Gift Boutique would like to provide some basic information about a chronic medical condition called fibromyalgia.

Extreme Pain of Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is characterized by long-term, body-wide pain and tender points— which are specific locations on the body that are overly sensitive when pressed— in the joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues. Fibromyalgia is unique because it can develop on its own or along with other conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.

The extreme pain caused by fibromyalgia can actually mimic the pain that occurs with types of arthritis, but the swelling, destruction, and deformity of joints seen in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis do not occur with fibromyalgia alone.

Living with Fibromyalgia

Some people with fibromyalgia notice that their pain improves during the day yet increases again during the evening, but many fibromyalgia patients have unrelenting pain every single day and every single night. The pain can increase with activity, anxiety, and stress, and in some cases it varies depending on the weather.

Fibromyalgia Awareness

We hope you’ll join us in our fight for fibromyalgia awareness with the help of our exclusive line of inspiring fibromyalgia awareness and support apparel and gifts. The eye-catching designs and purple fibromyalgia awareness ribbons can help everyone spread the word and help educate

Learn About the Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis Today

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that often affects the small joints in the hands and feet. It can be excruciatingly painful because it affects the lining of the joints, unlike the damage which is caused by osteoarthritis (usually shortened to arthritis.)

Most people are unaware that rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder—it occurs when a person’s body mistakenly attacks its own body tissues. Due to the way that rheumatoid arthritis affects the lining of the joints; painful swelling occurs that can ultimately lead to bone erosion and joint deformity.

Rheumatoid arthritis symptoms can include:

  • Joint pain
  • Joint swelling
  • Red and puffy hands
  • Morning stiffness that can last for hours
  • Fever
  • Weight Loss

Early rheumatoid arthritis is typically noticed in the small joints in the hands and feet, as mentioned above, but it can quickly progress to the shoulders, elbows, knees, hips, and other parts of the body. Rheumatoid arthritis can eventually cause joint damage that is irreversible, debilitating, and disfiguring. There is no official cure for rheumatoid arthritis, but treatment options are available that may help control the pain related to the condition.

Rheumatoid arthritis symptoms may come and go, but if you are experiencing persistent discomfort and swelling which you fear may be rheumatoid arthritis you should make an appointment to visit your doctor.

Here at Awareness Gift Boutique, we understand the pain and suffering that someone living with rheumatoid arthritis must endure on a daily basis. We are comprised of cancer survivors, survivor spouses, and we are doing our part to spread awareness of all causes that matter, including rheumatoid arthritis. Our wide selection of rheumatoid arthritis apparel and gifts is constantly being updated, and the following shirts are some of our popular designs:

Breast Cancer T-Shirts Help Spread Awareness

Breast cancer is one of the most common non-skin cancers among women, second only to lung cancer. Most people are unaware that there are actually several different types of breast cancer, and a breast cancer patient’s survival rate varies greatly depending on the stage of cancer, aggressiveness of the cancer, and their genetic makeup.

Breast cancer treatments can include surgery, drug therapy, chemotherapy, and radiation. If you or someone you love is diagnosed with breast cancer, it’s important to keep your chin up even though it’s hard to stay positive in difficult situations. If detected early enough and the best treatments possible are performed, breast cancer survival rates can be very good.

Awareness Gift Boutique is comprised of cancer survivors, survivor spouses, and avid awareness supporters and we are proud to offer an exclusive line of Breast Cancer Awareness support apparel and gifts. In fact, our online boutique features awareness merchandise for over 80 cancers, diseases, and causes. Our impressive collection of Breast Cancer T-shirts features eye-catching pink breast cancer support ribbons, unique designs, and powerful slogans about breast cancer awareness. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: It’s Real and It’s Out There

Here at Awareness Gift Boutique, we understand the importance of feeling healthy and well-rested. If you’ve ever felt so run down and tired that you can’t even leave your own house, you know what a terrible feeling it is. People who are living with chronic fatigue syndrome know that feeling all too well.

Chronic fatigue syndrome, or CFS, is a condition of prolonged and severe tiredness that is not relieved by rest. CFS is  not related to exertion: people who live with CFS are tired and fatigued no matter what they do, even if they try to “take it easy for awhile.”

The symptoms of CFS are similar to that of many common viral infections, but they last for months. In order to be officially diagnosed with CFS, someone must be experiencing symptoms for at least 6 months.

Symptoms of CFS include extreme tiredness that is not brought on by any particular activity. This fatigue must be severe enough to prevent someone from following through with their normal, everyday activities, such as going to work or cooking dinner. Their quality of life is severely altered because of their condition.

There is no real cure for CFS, which makes awareness of the condition even more important.  Awareness Gift Boutique strives to spread the news about all important causes, including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Our online boutique has a wide selection of CFS Awareness Products, including merchandise and apparel, such as these T-shirts:

Strokes: Be Aware and Prevent Them!

Did you know that certain factors and behaviors can contribute to strokes?

When a person has a stroke, they rapidly lose brain function because of a lack of blood flow to their brain. This usually happens due to a blocked or burst blood vessel or a blood clot. The lack of blood flow also causes their brain to have a lack of oxygen and glucose, which can lead to the death of brain cells and brain damage. This is the reason why someone who has had a stroke often suffers from a speech impairment or has problems with movement or memory issues.

The severity of a stroke depends on which area of the brain was affected. This means that someone who suffers a small stroke may wind up having minor problems like weakness in one limb, and someone who has had a larger stroke may be paralyzed or unable to speak at all.

Strokes are the third leading cause of death in the United States.  There are certain factors that may contribute to strokes that can be prevented: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, obesity, and use of alcohol are all things that you can try to keep under control.

Here at Awareness Gift Boutique, our strong commitment to stroke awareness and other pertinent causes make up realize how important it is to let the special people in your life know how much you care, and we offer a wide variety of products featuring the red stroke support ribbon:

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome: A Parent’s Worst Nightmare

I recently traveled to Washington, DC and had the opportunity to visit my brother’s grave at Arlington National Cemetery. He was killed in action in Iraq in 2007 and I carry my grief with me every single day. Time really does help heal wounds, but his death has been taken the hardest by our parents. I became a mother after my brother’s death. I have a new understanding of the horror a parent must feel when losing a child.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of death among infants from one month to one year old. Just as the name implies, SIDS is the sudden and unexplained death of an infant. It is incredibly frightening because it often strikes without warning in babies who were seemingly healthy.  SIDS is only diagnosed once all other causes of death have been ruled out.

Despite years of research, there is no single factor that is likely to cause SIDS on its own, but doctors urge parents to place infants under the age of one year on their backs to sleep, instead of on their stomach because most cases of SIDS usually occur while the baby is sleeping. Most SIDS deaths occur in babies between two and four months old, and for some reason SIDS deaths increase during cold weather.

Here at Awareness Gift Boutique, we realize that the death of a child is a heartbreaking tragedy in any case, and a death from SIDS leaves so many questions unanswered. We urge you to show your support for all of the parents and loved ones of babies taken from this world too early from SIDS by wearing one of these SIDS Support shirts.

Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness: Never Forget their Struggle

You’ve probably seen all the yellow ribbon stickers and magnets on cars that symbolize support for our troops, and you probably know that pink ribbons are often used to show someone’s support for breast cancer awareness. If you see a purple ribbon on display, it may mean that someone has a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia in adults – dementia being a serious loss of cognitive ability in a person who was previously unaffected by this problem. Alzheimer’s disease is degenerative, which means it gets progressively worse as time goes on. It is also incurable and terminal, meaning it has no real cure and Alzheimer’s patients eventually die with the disease.

Alzheimer’s affects more than the person with the condition.

Seeing a loved one suffer through the stages of Alzheimer’s is extremely difficult. I watched my grandmother go from a vibrant, outgoing woman to a shadow of her former self. She quickly went from “being a little forgetful” to forgetting to eat, forgetting to bathe, and wandering off at night in her pajamas and going home to the wrong house. She no longer recognized friends and family yet would tell strangers “I love you!” She was eventually placed with a full-time caregiver, which happens often with Alzheimer’s patients. She ultimately became bedridden, lost the ability to feed herself and spent her days hugging a teddy bear. Taking care of a person with Alzheimer’s becomes a full-time job.

We at Awareness Gift Boutique have a huge amount of respect for the stress and sadness that Alzheimer’s patients and their family members and caregivers must endure, and we strive to raise awareness of the disease with our wide variety of beautiful Alzheimer’s awareness apparel and gifts.

Colon Cancer Awareness Month T-Shirts, Apparel, Gifts, Merchandise (March)

March is National Colon Cancer Awareness Month.  This presents the perfect opportunity to ‘become aware’ of this deadly cancer by learning the symptoms as well as what you can do to lower your risk for getting it. Many people are under the mistaken belief that there is nothing they can do prevent colon cancer.  While it is true that you cannot control things like genetics, family history of colon cancer, your age, and other health conditions that you may, there are things you can do to lower your colon cancer risk.

Exercise – Studys have shown that a 30-45 minute brisk walk 5 days a week is enough to improve your risk of getting colon cancer

Diet – Make sure that 75% of your plate is plant foods. Better yet, go vegetarian!

Maintain a healthy body weight

Get regular colon cancer screenings beginning at age 50, or sooner if there is a family history of colon cancer

While maintaining a healthy lifestyle and enduring uncomfortable screenings may be difficult for some to do at first, it most definitely beats the possible alternative.

In observance of Colon Cancer Awareness Month, Awareness Gift Boutique At Zazzle recently released their Colon Cancer Awareness Month line of t-shirts, apparel, and gifts featuring exclusive designs, inspiring themes, and unique colon cancer blue awareness ribbons.  Take a look at some of our favorites:
